The Dutch Grand Lodge has a number of Provincial Grand Lodges. Provincial Grand Lodges are in countries with whom the Netherlands have a historical connection namely Indonesia, Surinam, South-Africa, Zimbabwe and the Dutch Antilles.
At present three Provincial Grand Lodges are still active: Surinam, the Dutch Antilles and Zimbabwe.
When The Dutch Grand Lodge was formed in 1756 some Freemasons were already present in the East and West Indies. The new Grandmaster of the Netherlands appointed one of them, a well known brother, as Provincial Grand Master, in order to stimulate the formation of lodges. He bestowed on him the right to form new lodges in his province. The role these new lodges played in colonial society, cannot be underestimated. They contributed actively to society, in which they were guided by Masonic principles. In the East Indies, modern Indonesia, the first lodge was “La Choisie”, founded in 1764.
In the West Indies, which included all Dutch settlements on and along the coast of South-America, the first Dutch lodge was “De Vriendschap” (The Friendship), which was founded on Curacao in 1757.
